The Admissions Process for New Families

We are still accepting applications for 2018-2019!

The priority deadline is February 28th, 2018. After that date we will accept students on a space-available basis. We still have a few spaces in grades 2 through 8.

If you’d like to join our mailing list for announcements, email admissions@chicagofreeschool.org.

The application form will include instructions on how to pay our $50 non-refundable application fee. Additionally, families will need to verify their income for our sliding-scale tuition.

We ask incoming students going into 3rd through 8th grades to arrange for a school visit as part of the admissions process.  Families of PreK-2nd grade students are welcome to visit as well, but it is not required.  Please email admissions@chicagofreeschool.org to arrange a visit!

When admissions letters are sent out, you will be notified of your tuition, as well as your registration fee between $175 – $350 depending on your sliding scale tuition amount.

Please read our Frequently Asked Questions, and feel free to email us at admissions@chicagofreeschool.org with any additional questions.

Sliding Scale Tuition

For 2018-2019, our sliding-scale formula is below.  In order to make the Chicago Free School as inclusive as possible, the school calculates tuition on a sliding scale based on a family’s total income. The minimum tuition is $3500 for PreK and $1500 for grades K-8.

Total income consists of adjusted gross income reported on federal taxes plus any non-taxable income such as social security benefits. Total income is multiplied with the appropriate assessment percentage (see table below) and rounded to the nearest $250.
Total income = taxable & non-taxable income
Assessed tuition = total income x assessment percentage

Total income
Assessment Percentage
Below $20,000 7%
$20,000-39,999 8%
$40,000-59,999 9%
$60,000-79,999 10%
$80,000-99,999 11%
$100,000 or more 12%

Sibling discount: we offer a 50% sibling discount for all children after the first child in a family, down to the minimum tuition of $3500 for PreK and $1500 for K-8.
